Skinning is a really good profession to have if you want to level it up while you are leveling your character. You will find lots of mobs to skin and have tons of leather to sell if you take the time to skin all the beasts you kill. I will go out on a limb and say that I still think it’s slightly more profitable to take up Herbalism or Mining as your gathering skill but Skinning is really simple and a lot easier to farm with than looking for nodes.
In this post I’ve listed just a few ways to make gold with your Skinning. The most obvious is to just skin and sell what you loot. If you are looking for more specific gold making strategies take a look at this Gold Guide.
Now, onto making gold with Skinning. First off be aware that the most profitable items to skin are going to be those related to the most recent expansion, which in this case is Wrath of the Lich King. Some very good items to skin for now are:
Arctic Fur – best farmed off the Plagued Proto-Dragons in Howling Fjord
Nerubian Chitin – off the Forgotten Depths mobs in Icecrown
Icy Dragonscale – off the drakes in northern Sholazar
Borean Leather – best farmed in Sholazar Basin
Jormungar Scale – off the Jormungars in The Storm Peaks
You can probably still farm for leathers like Rugged and Knothide but demand may not be that great so it might not be worth your time to farm for.
